Food as Nourishment

Monday, February 18, 2008

Weight Watchers helps me remember that I eat to live, not to find joy. When I hear that term, "emotional eating," I envision some sad, fat teenage girl sobbing into a bowl of double-fudge frosting in front of a Friday night sitcom lineup.

For me, it's going to a restaurant and feeling like my food should be a celebration and that special food is not healthy food. Or coming home on a Monday night and feeling disappointed that a hard day of working ends with a salad and tuna fish instead of warm soft food. I also deserve treats throughout the day because life is too short to deny myself chocolate kisses lying around at work. All emotion. All about food as joy and not food as fuel.

If food was fuel to me, I could be satisfied eating oatmeal and soup and tuna and apples. If only.
