Alex Is Coming!

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

Holly is coming back, with cats and her man in tow. Actually there is no towing, he is willingly driving himself to Akron Ohio to hang out with his girl and her two friends with a kid around the Holidays. He must really love her. I know I avoided kids before I had one, especially when there was lots of candy and cookies around. If we had a house in the Bahamas . . . maybe. ;)

But we're grateful he's up for the adventure because we have heard skads of lovely things and are ready to meet him already.

So, what have we heard?

He's brilliant
He's honest
He's frank (I thought he was Alex)
He's pragmatic
He's clever
He's apocalyptic
He's considerate
He's a good conversationalist
He loves Holly

Ice Skating!

Monday, December 22, 2008

Indy is a really great ice skater! This is a shock since the kid won't ride a bike (I figured he was large motor challenged). He was so into it. Loved falling down. Really was excited to master the skill. "Don't hold me!" And he only wanted to take the occasional break due to being cold with that freezing wind we had. I anticipated skating for 20 minutes tops, but we were out there for an hour! By the end, he was able to do it for a bit without holding onto anything. Here he is arriving from a hands free skating stint into my arms. Happy Mom. :)

Indy's First Pictures

I'm really proud of Indiana's first pictures. He has had the camera for a year but figured it out yesterday. Here is a link to all of them and it's fun to scroll through because you get a real sense of what is important / photograph-worthy to him. I like these ones below best.

Then he asked that we all put our hands out in front of us . . .

My Advent Calendar - Some Treats, Some Shit

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Well, the first day/box here in the Third Week of December wasn't all that much lovelier than that December 1 box. But you know what? I am unflappably grateful. What else you got world? Bring it!

OK, wait . . . now I'm kind of scared again. Maybe don't bring it. I have enough manure to plant an organic garden. Which might be a good Plan B job.

But Hey, Febreeze is on its way! Holly will be here TONIGHT! She bringing her cats. My kid is going to be freaking' thrilled! And thanks to her, and a bit of spreadsheet fun this afternoon, my mood is unfaltering joyful for the Holidays. God Damn it.

I Cannot Watch This Clip Enough

Sunday, December 14, 2008

I have so many questions about presidential security detail now.
Were the secret service having a snack in the back room?
Do presidential bodyguards take bullets but not shoes?
Did you notice the guy had time to reload by taking the second shoe off before he threw it?
How did this guy get so accurate at shoe throwing?
Where did W learn that bob and weave move?
Was it dumb or brave not to hide behind the podium after shoe #1?

We Saw The Nutcracker

Here are the kids at the Nutcracker Ballet this afternoon. They both did great and really liked it. Indy managed to sit through it until those last two Fairy dances and who can blame him? So he and I went into the Lobby and finished out by dancing out there together. They both seemed really impressed by the Palace Theater in Canton too, where this was held. And I thought it was great that there were so many children in the Canton Ballet for the production. Indy's favorite part was the Mouse King Army / Toy Solider battle. He got all excited during the party scene too when he saw the kids had swords. He's such a boy. What a great afternoon!

My Computer is the Messiah

Thursday, December 11, 2008

No, I am not referring to the fact that my whole life revolves around my computer, I am actually referencing its amazing ability after 4 years to come back from the brink of darkness time after time. This was, in fact, like the 4th coming of my laptop when I was sure I had been forsaken. And much like Christ, this baby doesn't owe me a damn thing. OK, metaphor crucified.

It's to the point now that when Windows refuses to boot, I just kind of shrug and think, "Whew. Glad I'm not at a meeting." After the second time it died, I learned to save anything important for upcoming presentations and whatnot into Google Docs. Everything else (pictures, etc) is either online or on the backup drive. Then it comes back to me and I am so blissed out every time and I hop right online and goof off. Hooray! HP is risen!

Indy's Christmas Movie

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

As a parent you get to watch a lot of movies and shows over and over. Some, like the Pixar variety, are pleasant, but most are pretty sub par. Shame on me as a parent, I suppose, but I exposed Indy to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas after he begged me to watch a "scary movie." I have now seen this movie and heard the soundtrack at least 10 times. This is my favorite kid movie obsession to date.

Below is Indy's favorite scene from the movie. He has most of the words memorized and especially loves the part where Jack takes off his head to "Recite Shakespearean Quotations." We have the soundtrack and I have played this track countless times this week as Indy wanders around the family room pensively re-enacting this scene. You would think that when I am asked to act out this scene with him, I would get to be Sally. But, no. I have to be the ghost dog. And I am instructed to "be sad when Jack is sad and happy when Jack is happy."

We Saw Santa

The Tree is Up, we saw Santa, and the kid still wants Military tanks and a Robot. Santa looked at me as if to say, "Uh, what do you think Mom, is that happening?" And I gave the old, "I got it covered" nod.

I think I understand now why kids are not always plain enthusiastic about seeing Santa. In addition to the obvious reason that he's a grown stranger in a suit, I think too that my kid was a bit star stuck. So imagine if you won a silent auction bid for lunch with one of your heros. You might approach the table with the same feeling a kid has approaching Santa. "What the hell am I going to say to this person? This is THE so and so."

Incidentally, was Santa always a photo racket? $17 was the cheapest photo I could buy and you get really pressured to buy them. I thought Santa was ideally a draw for the mall stores, not a revenue stream unto itself. Bah Hum Bug.

Well, I will say Santa didn't look like much of a draw when we were there Sunday afternoon. No line to see him and the mall was dead. Looked like an average Thursday night of traffic from the late 80s. Wait a minute, am I about to get nostalgic about the heyday of malls?!

More Baking Therapy

Friday, December 5, 2008

Almond Shortbread sandwich cookies. They are sandwiching homemade butter cream frosting. I am in love. I think they're my best cookies to date. The shortbread part tastes like those little confection sugar wedding cookies (pictured). But mine are not powdered but sprinkled with green and red sugar crystals. Then they are squishing the Christmas colored butter cream frosting between two of them. The best part? Because these are so crumbly and melt in your mouth, they are bite size and you can pop the whole sandwich right in. No muss, no fuss.

Door Slams Shut on the First Week of Dec.

Fortune and Misfortune become matters of opinion, I believe, once you shift perspective and move forward. But there is little doubt that this week launched heavy on the side of unfortunate events. Many of them will come to play out well, I don't doubt it, however, it was a heavy week for a lot of people.

Today a client called to let us know their long time CEO had died young and unexpectedly. This doesn't bring me any direct misfortune at this time, but it seemed an appropriate finale to this long and hard work week. May he RIP.
