Indy Makes His First Video

It's long, but the wrap-up is he loves Daddy and thinks meetings and marbles are related.

Happy Birthday Sage!

Friday, September 26, 2008

America has given you the best gift this year -- a great political season unfolding nicely right around your birthday.

Now you’re 37! A pup compared to Bob Barker pictured here. Oh, no wait . . .

The years just keep clipping by, don’t they? You never seem to mind. Probably because you think you’ll live to see 120. So we can check the box on continued optimism.

This year, we had the summer of Cedar Point, you went crazy and bought a conversion van, and then you reached the goal of truly owning each of the cars in our modest fleet. You are architecting the Lewis Family Entertainment hub, succeeded wildly with camping kits, and are almost entirely the “idea / culture guy” you’ve always dreamed of being at SageRock. You saw Indy off to school and are now “super cool” – earning lots of “Mommy Go Away” time.

You’ve been a huge source of joy to me as usual, and I’m really appreciating spending more time together again now that Indy is older. People wonder how we spend so much time together at work and home. I have so much fun with you! I would hate to see any less of you.

Thanks for another amazing year. Your life is a gift to so many. Let’s see what you do with 37!

Love,
Rocko

Indy's Back in School

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Took him this morning and he skipped (or something close to it) all the way through the parking lot and into the classroom a full 15 ft. in front of us -- the whole time checking back to make sure we were still coming. He found Mrs. Rich and said Hi and then asked me where Mrs. Schweier was (at her computer). Then told me he liked the student teacher, Sophia. Then tried to help EJ feel better. One little girl said Hi to him at the sink and another had a whole conversation with him about the crazy 5th grader's field trip.

Then we were outta there and he could have cared less.

I still can't believe he loves school. But he really does. Amazing.

Notes about Nothing Particular

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Well, MY power is back on, but my folks is still out and they're working on day 3 of Amish living. Yikes. I hear you get your sleep. No school for Indy yet because of Ike and power as well.

Otherwise the news of the week is work. Basically riding a bike uphill after a summer of coasting. It's not unbearable, just lots of exertion, sweat and some mild discomfort. Life was getting too cushy for me anyway. A Recession is just what an entrepreneur needs to get the heart pumping.

OK, I didn't do THAT right

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Turns out you have to freeze and batter them first. But they did still cook. For us though, it turned out that the pancake-style griddle-cooked dough was better. Less extraneous grease.

Power's Out -- Yummm!

Hurricane Ike just blew my power out! I bet people in large parts of Texas have power. Anyway . . . to entertain ourselves here at the Lewis house, we are baking old fashioned chocolate chip cookies. The Amish must have huge biceps as cookie stirring takes much strength. The oven has an electric start thingy, so I just pan fried the first set of dough and am about to deep fry my second lump.

David Foster Wallace Killed Himself

I am not usually touched by the death of strangers, but for some reason the news that DFW killed himself really bothered me. Perhaps I feel a connection to writers I especially enjoy. I think we're all guilty of believing we know someone when we read their writing. Do you know me better for reading this blog? Here is an LA Times Obituary.

Tornado Dreams

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

I am always highly prepared for tornadoes in my dreams and of course they represent anxiety. But even though I get everyone I love into the South West corner of the basement, and I know we'll survive, I'm still scared shit-less as everything bares down in slow motion. Work felt a lot like that today.

Storm

Last night was my ideal storm scenario. A large crash of thunder woke me up just enough to keep me drowsy but aware of a nice storm out my window. There was a good wind that blew my soft curtains, bright purpley flashes of light and gentle rumbles of thunder. And then as the storm faded, so did I, back into sleep.

Not Like Me

Monday, September 8, 2008

Sage went to bed at 8:30 and I am still awake at 10:30. It's Holly's fault. She kept me up talking about this adorable chap. Enough said there. But then I got hungry because I am up past my bed time and I helped myself to leftover ravioli. I seem to have no food willpower at the moment. Stress, perhaps? Ok, I better get to bed. The 6:15 Indy alarm has no snooze . . .

A Really Nice Sunday

Sunday, September 7, 2008

Played cars and bubbles with Indy this morning until 10:00. He has a great sense of humor that kid and we were cracking each other up all morning. Then what I thought was morning allergies (I had left his window open) turned into a mean cold. But kids are like dogs -- they have to be bleeding to not play and have a good time. So he was joyful all day in spite of the snot.

We went to Sam's and Home Depot just to bum around and I bought watermelon and Tulip bulbs. Then while Indy slept I read a magazine in the sun and then I took a nap too. Woke up and took Action Traction to the Park. Made burritos. Watched an older PG Disney movie called "Dinosaurs," which was kind of intense for a 3-yr-old but I liked it!

Now I am blogging because I just emailed the school to tell them he's not going tomorrow. Can't expect a teacher to wipe snot all day or peel him off the floor where he would no doubt be lying and running a car back and forth (as he did for 2 hours this afternoon).

A Really Nice Saturday

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Started out early (6:15) watching kid TV, but that was cool because I went to bed at 9:00 and got a nap on Friday. Then Holly and I talked briefly before I went to breakfast with just Sage and rediscovered again why I love hanging out with him. After that we bought 10 glass jars with the rubber sealed tops on them at Marcs (2 for a dollar), and I went home and cleaned out my cupboards and emptied all the half bags of crackers and cereal into these cute jars. Now my cupboards look awesome. Indy and I spent an hour at the park crusin' with Action Traction. Then we played bubbles and pulled weeds. Then I muscled him into bed for a nap and cleaned the dining room. Behold! 3:30 and I am goofing off at the computer.

Update

Friday, September 5, 2008

- Indy had a rough start back at school but is learning to accept his new life
- I am having more trouble accepting it now. I was brave for him at first and now that I have time to feel something, I miss him and feel sad.
- Work was tough this week. Lots of details, short on time, and I made some large mistakes. Making mistakes really stabs and deflates the ego. Not that mine can't stand deflation.
- SageRock was video interviewed by Crain's Cleveland as a potential "coolest place to work in N.E. Ohio." And Jenilee entered us (i.e.: we did not nominate our own selves, which would be embarrassing). Winning that would make Sage giddy. :-)

Short Week

Whew. Crazy 2 days so far back at work. I thought I had more energy to talk about that. But I don't. Pooped. That is all.
