$600K, No Really

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

They say a kid costs $600,000 to raise and that doesn't include college costs. No doubt. There are the diapers, kid food, plastic cups, clothes and shoes, big boy bed, dragging them to vacations, and kid "programs" such as the zoo or music classes, which then turn into lessons. And speaking of suckers, Old Trial has made me part with another chunk of my money for a Moms and Tots class this summer. I am mostly just obsessed with my son liking school and so I keep dragging him over there at every opportunity.

Indy's First Camp Out

Sunday, April 27, 2008

This was a surprisingly delightful adventure for everyone. I don't know what he loved most, but he seemed giddy about all of it: the fire, the marshmallows, the tent, the sleeping bag, the hot dogs, the twilight sandbox play, the "in-tent" movie, and the sleeping outside on the driveway.

In fact, he had so much fun he pitched a fit this morning at 8am when I drug him indoors to eat a pancake breakfast. Which leads to the one drawback of camping -- a little boy too excited to get more than 9 hours sleep. But that's OK. That's what spontaneous 10am naps are for. :)

Started with the tax bill
Sage got sick
My credit card was stolen
My computer died
Sage went to Houston
My house had no gas for 36 hours
My biggest client cancelled a service
I'm losing hair again

That's the view with the shit-colored glasses. There is a rosier view that includes things like my son, the weather, and SageRock people continuing to be amazing. But who gives a shit about hearing that version? ;)

No Computer is Cramping My Style

Monday, April 21, 2008

Not being a very good blogger thanks to not having a computer. Just thought I'd mention it while I was here at work with a nice reliable computer. I also have no natural gas in my house, soooo . . . no heat, hot water or oven. Monday. Grrr.

Later.

St. Louis revisited

Friday, April 18, 2008

Sage told me we didn't have a lot of St. Louis pictures and he was right. But here is one of my kid having fun at the City Museum. I really love that place.

BFF

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Today my son and I had this conversation:
Indy: Mommy, mommy!
R: Whaty?! Whaty?
Indy: Are you my Mama?
R: Yep! Mommy, MaMa, Mother. What do you like to call me?
Indy: My Best Friend (and then he hugged my leg).

No shit. That really happened. It seems like something from a movie, but it is actually directly from Noggin. Two cartoon characters Moose and Zee discuss their names -- full names, nick names, and then Moose says after discussing Zee's many names, "Do you know what I like to call him? My best friend." And then he hugs Zee.

So knowing that makes my son seem much less loving and more brainwashed, but you know what? I'll take it.

I love the sunshine

Right after my credit card was stolen, my computer died. I think it might just be a power cord issue. Then again, I'm on my third power cord. That would seem to signify a bigger problem with my hp zt3000. It is going on 4 years of constant use. I guess it doesn't owe me anything.

Like so many weeks, it started out a bit trying and is wrapping up much better. I'll tell you though, the sunny weather has made the whole week pretty lovely regardless of circumstance.

My Credit Card was Stolen

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

You'd think it was compromised online, but I'm pretty sure it was an offline number snatch. I get those fraud calls all the time because it's a business card and we make crazy-ass purchases all the time. But this time when they called, the purchases were definitely not me -- Puma.com, Sears, Montgomery Ward (are they still in business somewhere?), and the weirdest was an account setup with USPS for regular post office transactions - averaging about $150 a pop. Yikes. Sounded like they ran up over $3K. Thankfully, I am not responsible for any of it. Isn't that amazing? You hear awful stuff about credit companies and the sneaky stuff they do and the predatory lending and whatnot. But this "you're not responsible for stolen card charges" thing is a pretty great perk.

Now I just have to check my credit report and make sure I'm not a victim of identity theft. Acckk.

What's New With Me?

Monday, April 14, 2008

I am watching "Garfield The Movie" for the third time
Jennifer Love Hewitt was very cute and 1/2 the size of new Jennifer (pictured right)
My palms itch
My taxes are probably what's making my palms itch
I cashed in some AMEX rewards to console myself about taxes
I am thrilled it's getting warm and sunny
I am happy someone wanted the mattress we put into the trash

Eleventh Hour

Hi! I'm back from St. Louis and it was really fun, screaming 3-yr-old moments aside. I've got pictures somewhere I'll post soon.

More importantly today, it's time to pay the tax man. Nothing like waiting until the last moment, eh? I have learned several things this year thanks to taxes.

1. Client Media Spend can be a liability in QuickBooks, and I don't need to pay taxes on a few of their leftover dollars. And by a "few" I mean, "Holy Shit!! Spend that money!!"

2. I need to be an S-Corp. STAT.

3. It is a painful and delicate balance between saving enough profit money to pay taxes and not saving so much that you pay more taxes and have to save more of the money to pay the taxes with the money you saved . . . .

Hairball.

Hollywood Requires a Nap

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

A Guy on the plane today called my kid, "Hollywood," and he had the look (imagine that's a cell phone in his hand) and the attitude today on our way to St. Louis. I am amazed at how a two hour sleep deficit can take an adorable and fun kid on one end of a plane trip and then make him go ape shit and turn into a jerk upon arrival.

Holly is Coming!

Holly is putting a sense of purpose back into the spare room this summer and helping us out at work simultaneously. My son already asks daily if she's here yet, when is she coming, and will she be bringing the cats. Soon Indy, soon. I think he may be more excited than me.

I am feeling accomplished about the sparseness and spareness of the spare room. This video is for Holly. A sneak peak at her digs.

Hi! I just ate a dinner that didn't involve crackers. I also lost 2 lbs this week. Was it worth it? HELL NO!
